Kementari KAL

 A guided KAL Experience

Step into an ancient realm of
Beauty and Wonder.

Before Frodo and Gandalf, before Sauron and Galadriel, Yavanna Kementari planted the fields and forests of Middle-earth. She is the “lover of all things that grow in the earth…from the trees like towers in forests long ago to the moss upon stones or the small and secret things in the mould.”

Join me for a 6-week knit-a-long as we knit the elegant Kementari Stole. Together, we’ll explore the vast forests and fertile plains of Middle-earth, not as we know them during the events of the Lord of the Rings, but in a time so long ago it cannot be measured in years.

KAL phases

How it works

Explore the Fields and Forests of Yavanna with an Expert Guide

The KAL will run over the course of six weeks and will take place through email, on Zoom, and in the Refracted Light Fiber Arts Ravelry Group.

Each week will kick off with an email that contains a link to a group Zoom call where we can get to know our fellow travelers, get oriented to that week's project goal, and experience the wonder of Middle-earth with a read-a-loud from The Silmarillion and Tolkien themed artwork paired with the readings. We can then stay connected throughout the week in the Ravelry group where we can continue chatting about our projects and generally stay up to date.

Throughout the KAL, you will be expertly guided through both the beauty of Middle-earth and the joy of knitting a beautiful stole.

Along the way, there will be opportunities to win one of many lovely prizes, contributed from yours truly as well as a variety of talented designers and artists.

Keep reading for more information about timeline, prizes, and official rules.

Meet Your Guide

Designer, Dyer, Tolkien Expert

Helping others make beautiful things is my passion, and I can't wait to guide you through making your very own Kementari Stole. I've carefully planned each step of the process for you, so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the journey.

Phase 1 - Begins July 30

Phase 6 - September 3

In phase one, we will be walking through yarn selection and swatching. At the beginning of our creative journey, we will experience a portion of Tolkien's creation account, in which the Ainur sing the world into being as well as get introduced to Yavanna Kementari, our main character for this KAL.

Timeline

Phase 3 - Begins August 13

In phase three, we check our progress, remembering that it's not a race, but just enjoying the journey. We will learn of Yavanna's greatest act of sub-creation as we enjoy our own practice of sub-creating.

Phase 6 is our FO party. Show off your finished stole or your progress if you're still working (no shame). Our final reading is an excerpt from the chapter "Of the Sun and Moon" and is one of the last stories of Yavanna in The Silmarillion.

Phase 2 - Begins August 6

As we cast on and work through the first lace repeat, we will read "Of the Beginning of Days" in which we hear about Yavanna's part in the shaping of Middle-earth.

Phase 4 - Begins August 20

During our second progress check, we will read the first half of a story about Aulë and Yavanna in which strife enters their relationship.

Phase 5 - Begins August 27

In phase 5, we talk about binding off, finishing, and blocking the stole. Since these steps don't take long, this can also be a catch-up week for anyone who works at a slower pace or is catching up. We will also finish the story of Aulë and Yavanna that we began the previous week.
