RLFA Brand Values
One of the three transcendentals, Beauty draws us out of ourselves towards an encounter with the Divine. Often encountered where we least expect to find it, Beauty does not vaunt itself but is often only visible to those who have eyes opened to the wonder that is all around us.
"Earth's crammed with heaven, / And every common bush afire with God, / But only he who sees takes off his shoes"
-Elizabeth Barret Browning
Every single person on this planet is created in the image of God. We thus each have an innate creative ability which must be nurtured if it is to come to full flower. My goal with Refracted Light Fiber Arts is to nurture the creativity of others.
"[M]an, sub-creator, the refracted light / through whom is splintered from a single White / to many hues, and endlessly combined"
- J.R.R. Tolkien
When we make Beautiful things, using our innate Creativity, we work towards a renewal not just of ourselves or our communities but of the world itself. These small acts of resistance may not change the world, but they have great value, nonetheless.
“...for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs.”
- George Eliot
Humbly Rejoicing in the Beauty of Nature
Why manufacture color when you can coax it from flower, root, and leaf? Why dampen the qualities of wool when it is already durable and low-maintenance without a plastic coating?
Dyeing with natural dyes is not easy, but there is beauty in a process that requires me to relinquish a sense of control and work with nature rather than over it and delight in the serendipity of the unpredictable.
Humility and play are two cornerstones of my dye practice—humility in working with materials that cannot be fully controlled and yet reward playful experimentation.
